MINING & UNDERGROUND ENERGY SYSTEMS | VOGT CTE

Underground mining imposes extreme demands on people, technology, and infrastructure. Work areas are often located far from fixed power connections, access points are constantly changing, and energy requirements are persistently high due to the use of heavy machinery, conveyor systems, ventilation, lighting, and safety systems. At the same time, the burden of exhaust fumes and pollutants in underground areas poses a significant safety and health risk. Traditional solutions like diesel-powered generators or machines exacerbate this problem by producing emissions, noise, and heat in already sensitive environments.

In this context, it makes sense to either generate energy without pollutants or utilize high-performance energy storage systems that enable emission-free operation. Modern battery systems like PowerUP and FlexiBatt offer a crucial advantage here. They provide a flexible, safe, and sustainable energy supply underground – independent of the grid and without additional pollutant exposure.

KEY REASONS TO CHOOSE THESE PRODUCTS

1. No Emissions – Improved Safety and Working Conditions
Underground, emissions are not a marginal issue but a central safety and health concern. Diesel-powered equipment generates CO₂, nitrogen oxides, fine particles, and additional heat that accumulates in enclosed spaces. This increases the need for extensive ventilation management and burdens both humans and technology.

Local, combustion-free energy production and the use of high-performance energy storage eliminate these emissions right at the site of use. Air quality measurably improves, the energy demand for ventilation decreases, and the risk of long-term health consequences is reduced. Less emissions mean more safety, more stable processes, and lower follow-up costs.

2. Reduced Infrastructure Costs and Greater Operational Flexibility
Fixed electricity infrastructure underground involves significant investments. Cables, distributors, protective systems, and transformer stations must be repeatedly adjusted or relocated with the progress of mining. This incurs costs, downtime, and organizational effort.

Decentralized energy production and modular energy storage significantly reduce this dependency. Energy is provided where it is needed, without immediate grid expansion. This enables faster work commencement, lower investment costs, and flexible adaptation to changing mining conditions. This has a clear economic advantage, especially in early project phases or at temporary mining sites.

3. Greater Fuel Manageability and Reduced Operational Risks
The use of fossil fuels underground is logistically complex and safety-relevant. Diesel must be transported, stored, and distributed – often in tight, hard-to-access areas. This creates risks from leaks, fire hazards, and dependence on continuous resupply.

On-site energy generation and storage drastically reduce the need for fuel transport. The remaining fuel use becomes more predictable, manageable, and safer. Instead of constant resupply logistics, energy is available in stored form. This enhances system manageability, lowers risks in daily operations, and makes the overall energy use more transparent and calculable.

USE OF POWERUP IN UNDERGROUND MINING

PowerUP systems are particularly suitable for mobile, high-performance applications where significant amounts of energy are needed on short notice. This is a common scenario in underground mining, as work sites are constantly shifting and energy is required wherever it is currently needed.

A specific application scenario is the use of PowerUP to supply mobile drilling and cutting equipment in newly developed tunnel sections. In early project phases, there is often no fixed power connection available. PowerUP can serve as a temporary energy source to reliably operate machines, controls, and lighting. This enables rapid advancement without having to wait for the expansion of the electrical infrastructure.

Another realistic case is the use of PowerUP during maintenance and repair work underground. Mobile workstations require energy for tools, measuring devices, welding technology, or temporary ventilation systems. PowerUP systems can be brought directly to the job site, are immediately operational, and produce no exhaust fumes. This improves air quality, reduces safety risks, and increases personnel productivity.

In emergency and safety scenarios, PowerUP also plays an important role. In the event of a power outage or during evacuation drills, central systems such as emergency lighting, communication systems, or pumps can continue to operate reliably. The high performance and quick availability make PowerUP a valuable addition to existing safety concepts.

USE OF FLEXIBATT IN UNDERGROUND MINING

FlexiBatt systems are particularly suitable for applications where a stable and continuous energy supply is needed over extended periods. Underground, this primarily affects areas with a constant energy demand where emissions and noise are particularly problematic.

A typical application scenario is the use of FlexiBatt to power conveyor belts, ventilation systems, or pumps in mine sections without direct grid connection. FlexiBatt can serve as a central energy storage system that reliably delivers energy over long shifts. This allows for the replacement of diesel-powered generators, significantly improving air quality and reducing the burden on humans and the environment.

Another realistic case is the integration of FlexiBatt in electric or partly electric mining vehicles. Especially underground, it is crucial to avoid emissions while providing sufficient energy for long working hours. FlexiBatt enables longer operating times, predictable charging cycles, and improved vehicle utilization without generating additional exhaust gases.

Furthermore, FlexiBatt can be used as a buffer storage for fluctuating energy sources, for example, in combination with energy generated above ground or renewable sources. The stored energy is made available underground as needed, increasing the overall energy efficiency of the operation and further reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

USE OF ECOVOLTA IN UNDERGROUND MINING

Working underground places particularly high demands on electric machines, vehicles, and power supply systems. Confined spaces, dust, moisture, limited air circulation, and difficult escape and rescue conditions make a reliable and controlled power supply especially important. At the same time, electrification can help reduce local exhaust emissions, noise, and the need for ventilation compared to diesel-powered machines and generators.

Strict operational and legal safety requirements apply to underground use. Depending on the location, protective measures must be taken against, among other things, electric shock, short circuits, overcurrent, insulation faults, overheating, mechanical damage, dust, and moisture. Electrical systems must be professionally installed, regularly inspected, and used in accordance with the risk assessment for the respective underground operation.

EcoVolta offers various interesting solutions for such applications. The company’s traction batteries are described by EcoVolta as SUVA-compliant and suitable for underground mining. A patented safety concept is designed to prevent a cell fire from spreading to other cells within the battery system in the event of a cell failure. This makes the traction batteries suitable, for example, for the electrification of underground vehicles, transport machinery, and mobile work equipment.

Systems such as the ecoPowerTrolley or the ecoPowerStation PRO³ can be used for mobile power supply. They provide both 230 V and 400 V three-phase current at 50 Hz. This allows for the operation of numerous conventional electrical devices, including tools, pumps, lighting, measuring instruments, communication systems, and other mobile work equipment.

The ecoPowerTrolley offers a continuous power output of 11 kW and a maximum discharge power of 13 kW. The ecoPowerStation PRO³ also achieves a continuous power output of 11 kW and offers a higher maximum discharge power. Both systems feature insulation monitoring, all-pole disconnection, temperature and voltage monitoring, as well as redundant overcurrent protection functions. The IP65 protection rating provides protection against dust and water jets.

A key advantage of battery-based power supply underground is its locally emission-free and very quiet operation. Unlike a diesel generator, no combustion exhaust gases are produced at the site of operation. This can improve air quality and reduce the required ventilation effort. Fuel transport, oil changes, and typical maintenance tasks associated with a combustion generator are also eliminated.

EcoVolta thus offers an exciting option for electric vehicles and mobile power supply underground. The combination of exceptionally safe traction batteries, integrated monitoring and protection functions, and the provision of 400-V three-phase current enables flexible power supply to demanding loads.

However, suitability must always be verified for the specific application site. In particular, in potentially explosive atmospheres, only equipment that has the required Ex or ATEX certification for the corresponding zone may be used. Such certification is not listed on the website for the mobile EcoVolta power supply systems mentioned.
