Lithium-ion batteries have become indispensable in modern energy systems. They are used in photovoltaic systems, electric vehicles, portable devices, and industrial applications, among others. With their high energy density, long lifespan, and high efficiency, they offer numerous advantages. However, they also pose specific hazards that require safe and proper handling.
A significant safety risk of lithium-ion batteries is overheating, leading to what is known as thermal runaway. This can be triggered by mechanical damage, electrical faults, overcharging, short circuits, or inadequate cooling. In such cases, fires or explosions can occur that are difficult to control. Therefore, prevention is of utmost importance.
Safety in handling lithium-ion batteries encompasses several areas. This includes proper planning and installation, safe operation, regular monitoring, as well as appropriate storage and disposal. It is also crucial that users are informed about potential risks and know how to behave correctly in case of malfunctions or emergencies.
The aim of this introduction is to provide a fundamental understanding of the safety-related aspects of lithium-ion batteries. Only through responsible and informed handling can the great potential of this technology be used safely and sustainably.

Lithium fires are difficult to extinguish because they fundamentally differ from ordinary fires. In lithium-ion batteries, energy is stored very densely, and in the event of a defect or overheating, an uncontrolled chemical reaction occurs. During this process, oxygen is released from within the battery, allowing the fire to burn independently of external oxygen, continuing to burn even when attempts are made to smother it.
Additionally, extremely high temperatures are generated, which heat neighboring battery cells and trigger a chain reaction. This so-called thermal runaway causes the fire to spread continuously. Even if the fire appears to be extinguished, the battery can rekindle after hours or days because energy is still present inside.
While water can cool, it evaporates very quickly and does not always reach all hot areas. Therefore, large amounts of water and extended cooling times are necessary. Simultaneously, toxic and flammable gases are released during the fire, which complicates and endangers the extinguishing process.
In short: Lithium fires are challenging to extinguish because they have their own oxygen sources, burn extremely hot, spread in a chain reaction, and are prone to reignition.
WE DELIVER INNOVATIVE ENERGY SYSTEMS
