HYDROGEN SAFETY & PROTECTION CONCEPTS | VOGT CTE

Always pay attention to the provided operating instructions (manuals) and safety data sheets from the manufacturer. These contain device-specific information on setup, connection, operation, maintenance, and emergency measures that must be strictly followed.

GENERAL PRINCIPLES / HYDROGEN SAFETY

  • Only trained personnel may connect, operate, maintain, or transport the device.
  • Only original/approved connection components (regulators, hoses, valves) should be used.
  • No self-repairs on the fuel cell stack, gas connections, or electronic assemblies; only authorized service.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions.

HYDROGEN SAFETY (H₂)

  • Hydrogen is highly flammable and can be dangerous in high concentrations. Handle H₂ with the same caution as other compressed gases.
  • Only use hydrogen with the purity of 99.97% as required by the manufacturer and within the specified pressure range.
  • Before operation, check all connections, hoses, and regulators for leaks. Keep sources of ignition away.
  • Install and operate hydrogen warning devices (H detectors):
    • Use certified H₂ sensors suitable for the location (stationary and/or portable).
    • Installation: Position sensors at recommended locations (for hydrogen: near the ceiling/high points and near potential leak sources; also install in gas supply and storage areas).
    • Alarm integration: Link detectors with visible/audible alarm and, if possible, with emergency shutdown and ventilation control.
    • Maintenance/calibration: Document regular functionality tests, calibrations, and battery replacements as per manufacturer guidelines.
    • Logging: Record alarm events and check them immediately.
  • In case of a leak alarm: Initiate emergency procedures (evacuate, activate emergency stop, close H₂ supply if safely possible, ventilate, notify support).

LEGAL AND PERMIT REQUIREMENTS

  • Local regulations and laws regarding hydrogen, pressure vessels, storage, and transport must be adhered to.
  • Check before use and storage: national regulations, regional requirements, fire safety regulations, hazardous materials regulations (e.g., transport regulations), and any necessary official permits.
  • Documentation: Proof of training, transport documents, inspection records, and storage concepts must be available and up to date.
  • Responsibility: Operators and responsible supervisors must ensure that all legal obligations are met (including labeling, clearance regulations, fire extinguisher, and ventilation requirements).

Installation and Operating Conditions

  • Operate only in well-ventilated or ventilable areas; maintain minimum distances to air openings.
  • Use the device only within the specified temperature, humidity, and altitude ranges.
  • Protect from rain, direct water exposure, and spraying.
  • Store fuel cylinders separately and securely (well-ventilated, secured against tipping, protected from heat/flames).


Electrical Safety & Load Management

  • Observe the rated power and short-term power of the generator; no permanent overload.
  • Use protective devices (fuses, circuit breakers); ensure correct polarity.
  • The emergency shut-off switch must be easily accessible and disconnect the device immediately.
  • For sensitive consumers, use appropriate voltage stabilization / surge protection and, if necessary, island operation control.


Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Wear safety goggles, suitable protective gloves, and anti-static, flame-retardant clothing when working on pressure components.
  • Use spark-free tools when connecting/disconnecting gas lines.
  • Have a respiratory protection plan ready in confined, poorly ventilated spaces.


Fire Safety & Emergency Measures

  • Have a fire extinguisher and extinguishing agents ready for the worksite; provide suitable extinguishing agents for gas fires.
  • Document an emergency plan with evacuation routes, alarm chains, and contact addresses.
  • Do not restart the device after a fire or serious leak; alert authorized service.

Maintenance, Inspections & Documentation

  • Conduct regular inspections (leakage, filters, ventilation, electrical systems) according to manufacturer intervals and document them.
  • Log filter changes, service intervals, calibrations of the H₂ detectors and functional checks.
  • Document error codes, malfunctions, and all interventions; analyze and rectify recurring issues.


Transport & Storage

  • Transport generators and gas cylinders according to relevant regulations (remove regulators before transport; cap on valve attachment).
  • Secure cylinders vertically, store them separately from the generator; ensure storage area is well-ventilated and marked.
  • Use original packaging for extended transport.


Operation in Sensitive / Tactical Deployments

  • Consider site selection: avoid or minimize signature (noise, heat, EMC).
  • Implement access restrictions and physical security on the unit when supplying sensitive equipment.
  • Conduct EMC testing before deployment if critical radios/communications are being supplied.

DO'S AND DON'TS WHEN HANDLING HYDROGEN

Do’s – Things You Should Always Do

  • Always let trained and authorized personnel work with hydrogen systems.
  • Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions and safety data sheets.
  • Install and regularly calibrate H warning devices and gas sensors.
  • Conduct leak testing before each use (use leak detection spray or sensors, never use a flame).
  • Document regular maintenance and inspection according to manufacturer intervals.
  • Use only approved pressure regulators, hoses, and couplings for systems.
  • Check the emergency stop switch and ventilation systems for functionality before starting.
  • Use hydrogen of the correct purity and pressure
  • Ensure good ventilation, especially in enclosed spaces, workshops, or containers.
  • Only switch on electrical devices and radios in explosion-proof areas, if permitted.
  • Keep fire extinguishers (CO or suitable gas extinguishing agents) readily available.
  • Comply with storage and transport regulations according to national legislation (e.g., ADR, TRGS 745, BetrSichV).
  • Wear protective clothing: flame-retardant, antistatic, eye protection, gloves.
  • Regularly conduct staff training and practice emergency procedures.


Don’ts – Things You Should Never Do

  • Never search for gas leaks with an open flame or lighter.
  • No smoking, sparks, or open flames in the vicinity of the facility.
  • Never allow untrained personnel to work on hydrogen systems.
  • Do not make unauthorized modifications or repairs to pipes, valves, or pressure regulators.
  • Do not connect incorrect gases (e.g., technical air, nitrogen) to hydrogen systems.
  • No operation in closed, unventilated spaces without gas sensors.
  • Avoid using oily or greasy tools/seals with hydrogen (fire hazard).
  • Do not store hydrogen in uncontrolled containers for long periods.
  • Never use damaged cylinders, valves, or hoses.
  • No transport with connected pressure regulators or open connections.
  • Avoid unprotected electrical equipment in H environments.
  • Do not ignore if a sensor or alarm is triggered – immediately stop operations and evacuate the area.
  • Do not operate near heat sources or direct sunlight
  • Do not recycle or dispose of components without authorization or emptying.
