Hydrogen is colorless, odorless, and tasteless and cannot be detected without technical aids. Therefore, suitable hydrogen gas detectors must be used in areas where hydrogen is stored, transported, used, or connected.
Gas detectors help detect leaks early on, before a hazardous or explosive atmosphere forms. They should be installed particularly in enclosed spaces, technical areas, storage rooms, vehicles, enclosures, containers, and under ceilings or roof areas, as hydrogen is lighter than air and rises upward.
Gas detectors do not replace safe work practices. They complement ventilation, leak testing, suitable components, explosion protection, training, and clear emergency procedures. A triggered gas alarm must always be taken seriously: evacuate the area, avoid ignition sources, shut off the gas supply if it can be done safely, and notify qualified personnel or the fire department.
Key point: Hydrogen is invisible, odorless, and tasteless—therefore, always use suitable hydrogen gas detectors and take warnings seriously immediately.
Hydrogen gas, H2, is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It is not toxic, but can displace oxygen in enclosed spaces, thereby causing a risk of suffocation. The main hazard lies in its very high flammability: Hydrogen can form explosive mixtures with air and is undetectable without technical aids.
Principle
Hydrogen may only be used, stored, transported, or connected by trained personnel. The manufacturer’s specifications, safety data sheets, operating instructions, local regulations, and hazardous materials regulations always take precedence.
All hydrogen systems must be handled in such a way as to prevent leaks, ignition sources, electrostatic charging, pressure buildup, mechanical damage, and oxygen displacement.
Storage
Store hydrogen cylinders and containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area protected from direct sunlight. Ideally, storage should take place outdoors or in designated gas storage facilities.
