CHEMICAL ENERGY STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES EXPLAINED | VOGT CTE

Chemical energy storage refers to the storage of energy in the chemical bonds of substances. Electrical or thermal energy is converted into a chemical form so that it can be used temporally and spatially separated from its generation. The energy remains stored as long as the substance does not undergo any chemical change.

Nature stores energy chemically because it can remain available for a long time and be released when needed. Much of the hydrogen in the universe later formed stars such as our Sun. Inside the Sun, hydrogen fuses into helium and releases enormous amounts of energy. This energy reaches Earth as light and heat. Plants absorb sunlight through photosynthesis and store it as chemical energy in sugar. Humans, animals, and plants can later use this stored energy through metabolic processes.

HOW DOES THE BASIC PRINCIPLE WORK?

Chemical energy storage involves using energy to force a chemical reaction that would not occur spontaneously under normal conditions. The energy supplied is stored in the bonds of the resulting substances. When the reaction is later reversed or continued, the stored energy is released – usually as electrical energy, heat, or mechanical work.

Typical examples

  • Batteries and accumulators: Energy is stored through chemical reactions between anode and cathode and released during discharge.
  • Hydrogen: Electricity is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen stores the energy chemically and can later be used in a fuel cell or through combustion.
  • Synthetic fuels: Renewable electricity is used to produce energy-rich chemical substances that can be stored in liquid or gaseous form.

Why is chemical energy storage important?

  • It enables long-term storage (days, months, or even years).
  • It allows for the transport of energy over long distances.
  • It balances fluctuations in wind and solar energy.
  • It makes renewable energy usable for industry, transport, and heating.

Distinction from other forms of storage
Unlike electrical storage (e.g., capacitors) or mechanical storage (e.g., pumped storage), chemical energy storage is particularly suited for large amounts of energy and long durations, even though conversion losses usually occur. Chemical energy storage means “parking” energy in substances by altering their chemical structure – and releasing it in a controlled manner when needed.

ENERGY CAN BE STORED IN VARIOUS WAYS

Energy can be stored in various manners, depending on duration, capacity, and location it is required. In addition to chemical storage, the following are significant types of energy storage:

1. Electrical Energy StorageIn this method, energy is stored as electrical charge.

  • Example: Capacitors, supercapacitors
  • Property: Offers very rapid charging and discharging, but is only effective for short durations and smaller energy amounts.

2. Mechanical Energy Storage
Energy is stored in kinetic or potential forms.

  • Examples: Pumped-storage plants, flywheels, compressed air systems
  • Property: Sturdy and long-lasting, suitable for larger energy amounts, typically location-dependent.

3. Thermal Energy Storage
Energy is stored as heat or cold.

  • Examples: Hot water tanks, thermal mass in salt or rock, ice storage
  • Property: Simple and efficient for thermal management, but not directly convertible to electricity.

4. Chemical Energy Storage
Energy is held in chemical bonds.

  • Examples: Batteries, hydrogen storage, synthetic fuels
  • Property: High energy density and extended storage durations, yet with conversion losses.

5. Gravitational Energy Storage
Energy is stored through elevation of masses.

  • Example: Pumped storage or innovative systems utilizing concrete blocks
  • Property: Very reliable and sturdy, but limited to specific geographical locations.

6. Magnetic Energy Storage
Energy is kept in magnetic fields.

  • Example: Superconducting magnet coils
  • Property: Incredibly quick and low-loss, but it can be technically complex and costly.

Energy can be harnessed as electricity, motion, heat, chemical bonds, position, or magnetic fields – each form of storage has its unique role and application.

ADVANTAGES OF CHEMICAL ENERGY STORAGE

Chemical energy storage has proven to be particularly important because it combines properties that other storage forms can only partially provide. The biggest advantages are:

1. Long-term Storage
Chemical energy carriers can store energy for weeks, months, or even years without significant losses. This is ideal for compensating seasonal fluctuations in wind and solar energy.

2. High Energy Density
Chemical storage can hold a lot of energy in a small space. Especially hydrogen and liquid energy carriers are significantly denser in energy compared to many mechanical or electrical storage systems.

3. Good Transportability
Stored energy can be easily transported – as gas, liquid, or in batteries. This allows energy to be utilized where it is needed, even far from the location of generation.

4. Versatile Use
Chemical energy carriers can be used for electricity, heat, mobility, and industrial processes. They are therefore very flexible and can be used across sectors.

5. Decoupling Generation and Consumption
Renewable energy can be stored when it is abundant and later used when there is no sunlight or wind.

6. Utilization of Existing Infrastructure
Many chemical energy carriers can be integrated into existing infrastructure, such as tanks, pipelines, or industrial facilities. This facilitates the transition to a sustainable energy system.

Chemical energy storage is particularly strong because it can store, transport, and flexibly utilize large amounts of energy over the long term – precisely where other storage systems reach their limits.
